Studying for 1Z0-147: Program With PL/SQL

1Z0-147 will satisfy the PL / SQL portion of the Oracle PL / SQL Developer Certified Associate certification. It is the predecessor to the newer 1Z0-144 exam that was created for Oracle Database 11g. 1Z0-147 will satisfy the PL / SQL portion of the Oracle PL / SQL Developer Certified Associate certification. It is the predecessor to the newer 1Z0-144 exam that was created for Oracle Database 11g. The 1Z0-147 exam was created for version 9i of the Oracle database and the material has not been updated since. As a general rule, when Oracle has two incarnations of an equivalent test, taking the current current one is recommended. However, you may have your own reasons to take this test instead of 1Z0-144. Both the OCA and OCP-level Oracle PL / SQL developer certificates are highly thought after candidates and so both of these tests are commonly taken. Having a demonstrated knowledge of PL / SQL development concepts is extremely useful for Oracle developers to add to their resume. The Program with PL / SQL exam has one of the highest passing score requirements of Oracle certificates, making it a reliably difficult test. It is certainly not an exam that should have been taken without a great deal of preparation. The intent of this article is to provide you with information that can help put you on the right track in studying for the test.

Everything that will be covered in the 1Z0-147 exam is available on the Oracle Education website. Oracle PL / SQL has a significant number of capabilities and functions that are not in that list. However, only the topics provided will have questions on the test. The lists from Oracle Education are always accurate. The exam has ninety-one topics in eleven subject areas. The test itself will have sixty-six multiple-choice or multiple-answer questions and you'll have ninety minutes to complete it. The passing score is seventy-seven percent. There is no partial credit for the multiple-answer questions. Any question that is not answered counts against your score as much as one answered incorrectly. You should never leave questions unanswered – even if you simply pick answers randomly in the final seconds before the test ends.

Most of the questions in the 1Z0-144 exam will reference one or more PL / SQL blocks. You must be able to read and interpret PL / SQL code quickly. In most cases the PL / SQL will not be formatted in the same way that you would write your own code. This may seem minor, but it will slow you down. You must have a good foundation in PL / SQL syntax in order to do well on the exam. Many of the questions will ask you to look at a procedure or function and determine if it will work; what it will do; or which line will cause an error. If you can not 'parse' PL / SQL in your head and work out how it will function, you will be at a grave disadvantage when taking the test. Some of the questions will display a subprogram and you will have to determine what is needed for the code to function. This may be a privilege, or parameter value, or development environment setting. Possibly a third of the questions will not directly include PL / SQL code at all, but will deal in auxiliary information, such as definitions, parameters, or functionality.

There are a number of exhibits in the 1Z0-147 exam questions. Some of them will be required in order to answer the question asked and others may contain additional details that could have been useful in answering the question, but are not required. The instructions in the test always indicate that you should look at the exhibit and then answer the question. I have never found that to be a good strategy when taking Oracle certification tests. Reading the question first lets me know what it is that I should be looking for on the exhibition. Also, I have often found that viewing the exhibition is not required to answer the question. If the exhibit can be skipped, then that is time saved that can be sent answering questions.

1Z0-147 covers a great deal of information and it has a high high passing score requirement. The combination of these two factors means that you would be well advised to prepare diligently for this exam so that you know PL / SQL fundamentals by heart. Be sure to take the time to look at the exam topics on the Oracle Education website. The topics are laid out in the form of a checklist. Use it as one and check off the topics once you feel confident that you have them mastered. Once you have done that, schedule the test. Good luck on the exam.

Oracle PL/SQL Developer Certification: 1Z0-147 or 1Z0-144?

For Oracle professionals who are pursuing the Oracle PL / SQL Developer Certified Associate certification, there are two exams that will satisfy the PL / SQL requirement: “1Z0-147: Program with PL / SQL” and the newer version: “1Z0-144: Oracle Database 11g: Program with PL / SQL “. There is a fair amount of confusion among candidates seeking certification over whether they should take one test, or the other, or both. The intent of this article is to help explain the two tests, their similarities and differences, and why you might take one over the other.

One thing should be made clear from the outside: there is never a reason to take both tests. Unlike the DBA track, Oracle PL / SQL certificates are not tied to the database release. You do not become certified in release X of Oracle PL / SQL and then have a requirement to take upgrade exams. Because either of these two tests will satisfy the OCA-level PL / SQL requirement, passing the other would provide no certification benefit. That said, you must decide which of the two tests to pursue. The 1Z0-147 test is several years older than 1Z0-144. Without there is a specific reason that taking the older test will benefit you, your better option is to go with the 11G version of the exam. Until Oracle retires 1Z0-147, however, the choice is yours.

The two tests have a great deal of commonality between them. This makes sense as they are for essentially the same topic. What is surprising is the number of differences that exist between the two. 1Z0-144 is not simply a remake of the earlier test with new PL / SQL features from versions 10G and 11G tacked on. There is an entirely different feel to the test and the topics covered. There are several sections that do not exist in 1Z0-147 which cover features that did not exist in 9i. However, the majority of the new sections in 1Z0-144 cover core topics of PL / SQL programming that arguably should have been in the earlier test. Some of the types of information covered in 1Z0-144 but not 1Z0-147 include:

  • The benefits of using PL / SQL
  • Programming basics, including variables, conventions, attributes, and lexical units
  • Use of SQL functions in PL / SQL
  • Implicit vs. explicit data conversion
  • Use of labels, indentation, and whitespace to make more readable code
  • The use of DML in PL / SQL
  • The use of control structures and Loops
  • The use of cursors and cursor attributes
  • The use of the FOR UPDATE clause
  • Exception Handling
  • PL / SQL Design considerations
  • Composite data types
  • Autonomous transactions
  • BULK SQL operations
  • PL / SQL compiler changes

The number of topics covered in 1Z0-147 that are not covered in 1Z0-144 is much smaller. However, the first three are considering considering the revised move to PL / SQL fundamentals in the 11G test:

  • Privileges required to execute procedures
  • Parameter modes and DEFAULT values
  • Parameter passing methods – by reference vs. by value
  • A much larger focus on triggers
  • More references to client-side PL / SQL (1Z0-144 large ignoreores client-side)
  • More focus on PL / SQL dependencies and invalidations
  • Large objects and the use of the DBMS_LOB package

If you end up pursuing 1Z0-147, be sure to study using the Oracle 9i documentation. Capabilities that were added to PL / SQL in 10G or 11G will not be on that test. Having reviewed the topics for both tests, I consider 1Z0-144 to be the better exam from the standpoint of the information tested. The subject matter is a better mix of what is important for an entry-level PL / SQL developer to know. New developers studying for this exam will come out with a more rounded and complete knowledge of PL / SQL fundamentals. Whichever exam you pursue, be sure to study each of the exam topics listed on the Oracle Education site before scheduling the exam. Good luck on the test.

Oracle Certification: Satisfying the Hands-On Training Requirement

A number of the higher-level Oracle certifications mandate that candidates attend one or more training courses as part of the certification process. The intent of this requirement is to reduce the number of people who have never actually worked with the software from obtaining a certification that indicates that they have proficiency in it. Not all training will meet this requirement and not even all Oracle Education training will meet it. This article will only discuss the various training options from Oracle education. They have a list of approved third-party vendors. You should contact Oracle Education before scheduling training with a non-Oracle Education vendor to ensure that it will meet the requirement.

Not all, or even most of Oracle certificates have a hands-on stipulation. A number of candidates mistakenly assume that a certification they want requires training. In particular, the Oracle Advanced PL / SQL Developer Certified Professional has no hands-on requirement. I have often seen people asking about what training they should take so that they can attain this certification. At this time, only the certificates listed below have a training requirement. You can find out which Oracle Education classes meet this requirement at the Oracle Education website:

  • Oracle Database 9i, 10G, & 11G Administrator Certified Professional
  • Oracle Database 10G & 11G Administrator Certified Master
  • Oracle Certified Master, Java SE 6 Developer
  • Oracle Certified Master, Java EE 5 Enterprise Architect
  • Oracle Application Server 10g Administrator: Certified Professional
  • Oracle E-Business Suite 11i Financials and Supply Chain Certified Professional Consultant
  • Oracle E-Business Suite R12 Supply Chain and Financials Consultant
  • Oracle 11i Applications Database Administrator Certified Professional
  • Siebel 7.7 Certified Consultant
  • Siebel 7.7 Analytics Developer Professional
  • Siebel 7.7 Data Warehouse Developer
  • Siebel 7.7 Server Architect Professional
  • Siebel 8 Consultant Certified Expert
  • Oracle Certified Professional, Oracle Solaris 10 & 11 System Administrator
  • Oracle Certified Expert, Oracle Solaris 10 Security Administrator

When studying for an Oracle certification, the Oracle Education course materials are just about impossible to beat in terms of their relevance to the certification topics. The course materials and tested topics match right down the line. That said, it is also just about impossible to find a more expensive method to prepare for Oracle certification tests than Oracle Education courses. If you can afford it or if your employer will pay for it, the material is excellent.

Oracle Education offers four distinct types of training: classroom, live virtual class, training on demand, and self-study courses. Only courses on the approved list from the first three types count toward the training requirement. The self-study CD-ROM courses do not meet the hands-on requirement for certification. That side, the four training types and their pluses and minuses are:

Classroom Training

The classroom training requires you to travel to an Oracle Education center, so you will likely incur travel and hotel expenses unless you are sufficient enough to live within commuting distance of a training center. In the classroom environment, you will have the greatest interaction with the instructor and with other classmates. You should not underestimate the value of being able to network with other people in the class. The classroom training offers the greatest potential for learning of all four methods. It is also the option that requires the greatest expense and effort.

Live Virtual Class

Live Virtual Classes are one step removed from classroom training. The class is given live, but you 'attend' it through a streaming video feed over the internet. You can there before access the class from your workplace or home. It offers almost all of the options of the classroom, including labs, interaction with the teacher and so forth. However, you do not really interact with the other students to the same degree as in the classroom. The course fee is the same as that of the classroom training, but the elimination of travel and hotel requirements can make the total cost considerably lower than for classroom training.

Training on Demand

Training on Demand is similar to the LVC classes, except they are recorded rather than being streamed live. The recording contains video from actual classes, a hands-on practice environment, and the ability to ask questions of the instructor (albeit not in the same interactive fashion as LVC). The material is comparable to the live classes, but the fact that is it recorded means you can access it at any time, watch the videos at a faster or slower pace than they were given, and re-watch sections if you want. The cost of the class matches that of classroom training and LVC. The lack of travel and hotel costs put the total expense on par with that of the LVC option.

Self-Study Courses

Oracle's self study courses are either downloadable or available on CD-ROM. As mentioned earlier, these do not fulfill the hands-on requirement for certification. However, they are approximately half the cost of the other three options, and can be reused by multiple employees if you company has several Oracle professionals that require training.

Exchange server 2010 certification path was designed specifically with the information technology professional in mind. Certification paths are available for exchange server 2007, and exchange server 2010, as off the writing of this article.

Being certified in exchange server will let prospective employers know that you have the skills, and abilities necessary to manage and install an enterprise messaging system. Certification paths when followed correctly, along with many dedicated hours of study will lead to examination passages.

Hopefully, if you are searching for information on how to become exchange server certified, you are probably not new to exchange server. If you are new to exchange server I will assume that you have already done your research on what an exchange server is all about. In the event you have not done your research, I will briefly explain.

Basically, exchange server is a client and server application that was designed for the enterprise, to run its mission critical email system.

To be successful as an exchange administrator it is advisable that you always strive to upgrade your certification to the latest available certification, once you have achieved it.

If your certification is not upgraded, you will not be marketable, and your skills will become obsolese.

Levels of Certificates

The exchange server 2010 certification path consists of four level of certification. The four parts, or levels consist of the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialists, Microsoft Certified IT Professional, Microsoft Certified Master, and the Microsoft Certified Architect.

The first two certificates in exchange are very easy to achieve, if followed correctly. The other two parts require much more time, and in-depth study.

Paths to becoming certified as an exchange server professional will change, as the creator of the exchange product releases new updates to their software.

Using a planned certification path will simplify the direction that you should take in becoming certified, in any computer technology subject, not only exchange server.

To achieve the best success when preparing for an exchange server exam, it is advisable that you follow the certification path that were designed by the creator of the certification.

This is true with any certification track. The manufacture of the certification track always knows the best path to take in order to pass their certification examination.

To achieve the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialists certification, or MCTS certification, you are required to sit and pass one examination. The number of the exam is 77-662, and the name is “TS Configuring Microsoft Exchange server”.

The Microsoft Certified IT Professional, or MCITP exam is the second level of IT certification for exchange server 2010. To obtain certification for this exam, you are required to sit and pass exam number 70-663 entitled, “Designing and Deploying Messaging Solutions with Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 “section.

To prepare for a successful pass in either of the first two examination tracks, Microsoft has recommended that you either seek to do Classroom Training, E-learning, or use a Microsoft Press Book for examination preparation.

If you are on a budget, purchasing a Microsoft Press Book will be less cost than the other two options. The only drawback of using the press books would be that you will have to put together and install some sort of virtual lab using virtual machines, to complete the exercises in the book. If you are not one of those technically advanced individuals, this would present a challenge.

E-learning can be used in place of not being able to prepare a lab to complete the exercises, using the Microsoft Press Books. Virtual machines are automatically included online when doing the e-learning studies, to prepare for the examination. If you are a person that teaches by simulations, this kind of training may work best for you.

Normally with the five days of Classroom Training option, you may be required to travel to another town, or city to complete the training. In my opinion, if you are able to afford classroom training, then I highly recommend this option.

With this option, you are able to ask the instructor as many questions as you wish during the training. This will help in the understanding of the material much better. No need to worry about putting together any virtual machines. The virtual machines are included as a part of the course to complete the exercises. Virtual machines are prepared using physical host machines.

When I mentioned host machines I am referring to a very large and powerful computer system that has many virtual machines installed. Virtual machines running on physical host machines can cut the cost of running many computers on its own physical machine tremendously.

Even though these preparation tools are proposed by Microsoft for successful completion of the exams, many other persons have successfully passed these examinations by using other preparation tools, and instructional materials not recommended by Microsoft.

To locate other preparation tools and exam training solutions for either of the first two exams, all you have to do is type the keywords, “exchange server 2010 exam preparation”, into the search engines like Google or Bing, and you will be amazed of what other materials are available on the internet, to train for this exam.

The third level of certification for exchange server 2010 is the Microsoft Certified Master, or MCM. The requirement for certification for this level is slightly more difficult than the other two levels.

Before attempting to pass the MCM, you should have already achieved the first two certificates in the track.

You are required to attend a training course that normally takes about three weeks in duration to complete, and also sit and pass three computerized examinations during the training. Then you will also have to pass a final lab examination for successful completion.

The fourth and last level of certification is the Microsoft Certified Architect, or MCA. All you have to do in order to achieve this certification is pass the MCA Board Exam.

The first three parts of the track is also required for entry into this program. This exam is conducted by Microsoft, and other professionals working with exchange server.

There are a number of major improvements to ShoreTel in Version 13. Most improvements have been related to bringing ShoreTel SIP into compliance with the standards accepted by the SIP community at large. Although there are improvements for other features like the SA-100, this release is notable for what it does NOT announce. The marketplace is claiming enough but the issue of having your development agenda driven by an outside company must be dreadful! In this case, Microsoft dominants many of the decisions that ShoreTel must make with respect to the priority of features and releases. So how tightly is ShoreTel bound to Microsoft? Why have they not followed the path chosen by CISCO and others to move to an “appliance” built on Linux?

Historically, ShoreTel server side functionality was driven by Microsoft. Simple issues like changing FTP port numbers between 32 bit and 64 bit servers might seem like trivia, but it is maddening for change management. Microsoft products continue to drop support for their older computing model that used CSIS and TAPI in favor of the Client Application Service or CAS model. We saw the first effects of this in Version 11 with the release of the Communicator for Web. In Version 13, CAS support has now been extended to Communicator for Windows. In fact, Version 13 ShoreTel no longer supports TAPI, CSIS or MAPI and for this reason ShoreTel will no longer run on Windows 2003! At the end of the day, how long until ShoreTel cuts its dependency on Microsoft completely? We think this is something that the company must do if not to remain competitive, then to control its own product development priorities!

ShoreTel SIP meets RFC 3264 Compliance!

Actually, ShoreTel adopted SIP before any other major competitor outside the Asterisk community. The early adoption of SIP meant that ShoreTel had to design solutions before the community had solidified around a standard. Time goes by and here we are more than a decade later and SIP has had many changes, while ShoreTel's Enhanced SIP was not in step with these changes. Version 13 is all about bringing ShoreTel SIP into compliance with key areas if SIP and making a SIP trunk feature equivalent to a PRI trunk. This is accomplished through compliance with changes in the Session Description Protocol and the creation of “Media Proxy Ports”.

SiP is used to setup calls. The actual media stream between the end points is handled by other protocols, namely RTP. When a SIP end point generates an INVITE it may send a session description (ie SDP) of how it would like the call to take place, indicating its capabilities and preferences. The other end may accept the INVITE with or with our definitions of the SDP thus the Offer / Answer definition of RFC 3264. ShoreTel historically had no way to deal with the SDP information treated this as an “INVITE with no SDP”. The usual response to this type of INVITE would be to send back a SDP, but ShoreTel generally responded with “Not acceptable here”. With the release of Version 13 ShoreTel will now be fully complacent with RFC 3264 and play nice with the other kids in the Offer / Answer game.

Once the SIP parameters have been established, the media stream is generally setup between the end points. This means that the actual voice packets are going between the two connected phones. Now if you think about this a minute, you will understand almost intuitively why features like Call Recording, Office Anywhere, Monitor etc. did not work on SIP trunks using earlier ShoreTel versions. If the media is streaming between my end point and your end point, who is listening for any DTMF tones that might indicate we want to activate a feature? How would you play Music-on-Hold?

Enter ShoreTel Media Proxy ports! These will be switch resources set aside to enable a point at which ShoreTel can mix or “mesh” media streams. This means that features previously could not be activated on a SIP trunk should now work. On switches that can support Media Proxy Ports (not all ShoreGear switches can) you will find a new option in the drop down menu for configuration ports to enable “SIP Media Proxy”. The proxy is actual for one SIP trunk and a media proxy so it wipes out 5 SIP trunks or 5 IP phones. The ShoreTel 220 / T1 / E1, 220T1A, T1K and E1K can also be used to provide SIP media proxy functionality. You will find a new check box that allocates all configurable ports on that switch to this function. For this reason, currently a switch that supports a PRI can only support 20 channels. On the other side of the coin, you were matching that PRI with SIP anyway right? The good news is SIP trunks will have feature parity with PRI trunks and these ShoreGear switches can be re-purposed.

ShoreTel will support “on demand” media proxy as well as dedicated resources. Change and configuration management skills will most certainly be tested here, as the configuration is non-trial. Music-on-hold for example will need to be carefully considered. Historically, MOH could have been played by any switch in a site. If you want to play MOH to your SIP trunk you will have to use the ShoreGear switch that is configured as the media proxy. Other items of note are support for Digest Authentication and enhanced fail over detect. The ShoreGear switch can now provide registration credentials when presented with a CHALLENGE request. The ShoreGear SIP Profile now provides for the OptionsPing to test for 5XXX / 6XXX network error to mark a trunk group out of service. Major improvements in ShoreTel SIP!

The use of an Ingate like device is still a requirement. Candidly, a serious enterprise should not be implementing SIP trunks without some form of “border controller” so get over it. SIP Message Normalization, NAT traversal, Pinhole management, network separation and providing for more SIP Channels then you can get on one ShoreGear switch are reasons that you need a border controller. Currently all SIPTrunk certificates by ShoreTel have been completed with an Inget in the equation.

There are a few changes to the System Administration Interface to facilitate the media proxy configuration. With the death of CSIS, TAPI and MAPI there are also some changes to the Windows Communicator.

Oracle Certifications: What Is the Difference Between OCA, OCP, OCE, and OCM?

When Oracle initially created their certification program, there was a single design and abbreviation: Oracle Certified Professional (abbreviated OCP). However, several years back, the company broke out the program into four different levels of certification, each with its own title and abbreviation. This article discusses each of the levels and some of the differences between what they mean and what is required to attain them.

OCA – Oracle Certified Associate

The Oracle Certified Associate is an entry-level certification. Oracle Education targets these certifications for individuals just becoming familiar with Oracle or with one to two years of experience in the tested area. For candidates that have achieved this certification without any work experience, the expectation is that they have demonstrated knowledge of the fundamentals and can be expected to perform satisfactorily under supervision.

Generally OCA certificates require only that a candidate pass two exams and have no additional requirements. The tests for the OCA-level certificates tend to cover a broad range of topics to a decrease depth. The goal of the exams is to ensure that the candidates have a basic understanding of the features in the tested area and how to apply them.

OCP – Oracle Certified Professional

The Oracle Certified Professional design is the next step up for candidates that have achieved the OCA certification. Oracle Education targets these certificates for individuals that have three to five years of experience working with Oracle in the tested area who can perform most activities unsupervised. The certification is not really intended for candidates that have no Oracle work experience. Candidates that have done so will have demonstrated a defect knowledge of the foundations in the area being certified and may be able to work without supervision.

OCP certificates build on the Oracle Certified Associate level and require that a candidate pass one or two exams beyond the OCA requirement. Some of the OCP-level certificates also have a hands-on training requirement. The tests for the OCP-level certificates tend to narrow the range of topics slightly and require more in-depth knowledge to answer. The goal of the exams is to ensure that the candidates have a thorough understanding of the tested topics and can make use of them successfully.

OCE – Oracle Certified Expert

The Oracle Certified Expert design is the odd man out. In one sense it is the next step up from the OCP-level, but it is outside the hierarchy of certifications inherently. OCE exams target niche expertise areas. They are intended to show a high degree of proficiency in a very narrow subject area. These certifications help to define a candidate's area of specialization. It is not a step in the OCA-OCP-OCM tier, but it helps to expand upon an OCA or OCP certification.

OCE certificates require a single test and have no pre-requisites or hands-on training requirements. The tests of expert certificates cover a very narrow area to a significant depth. The intent of the tests is to demonstrate that the candidate has a significant expertise in that area.

OCM – Oracle Certified Master

The Oracle Certified Master Designation is the highest level certification offered by Oracle. It builds on the OCP design, requiring that a candidate be an OCP, attend two advanced hands-on training courses, and pass a two-day performance-based practical exam. Oracle Education targets this certification for candidates with an absolute minimum of six years of experience administering Oracle databases. Candidates that pass the OCM certification will have demonstrated the ability to administrator enterprise-class databases.

The difficulty and cost of the exam plus the cost of the required training makes this a very rare certification for individuals to have. The holders of this certification are thought after consulting companies and corporations with critical Oracle installations.

Any of the Oracle certificates are a valuable addition to your resume. None of them in isolation, however (possibly with the exception of the OCM), will have recruiters tracking you down. Work experience, education, and other factors play a role in attracting the notice of people recruiting for Oracle positions. Getting a certification and sitting back to wait for the job offers to roll in is not a winning strategy.

If you are seriously considering a career in the software industry and are thinking of opting for software testing, you must get some proper training before embarking on this role. If you are already in a non-computer job and would like to make a switch to software testing, then it becomes even more imperative that you first acquire some knowledge about software testing. A software tester is basically a quality assurance professional whose job is to ensure the quality and reliability of the software program. This is so that other personnel like software managers, software developers and stakeholders do not have to worry about quality control or errors and virtual bugs in their software systems. A quality assurance training program will arm you with all the prerequisites of a software tester and you must opt for a certified and approved quality assurance training course.

As a software tester you will have to check that the basic features of the software applications are functional and performing as intended. You will also have to keep the needs of the user in mind and to ensure that the applications in compliance with user needs. You will have to work alongside the software developers to check whether the software codes are working as per norm and are integrating well or not. The software project has to meet the specific standards and needs which have been laid down beforehand. With quality assurance training you will able to comprehend all the intricacies of software testing.

With quality assurance training you will be able to learn the two most vital skills necessary in this area like those of communication and technical knowledge. Communication skills including both written and verbal are extremely critical in this field because it is important to get your point across and comprehended by varied team members. Any miscommunication may result in failure or errors in project completion. Technical know-how is of course indispensable if you wish to step into the software industry. In your quality assurance training you will be taught various testing procedures, programming languages, database and test concepts, testing tools and analytical skills without which no software testing is complete. Knowledge of programming languages is vital for automation testing, unit testing and scripting.

Software testing is considered an excellent job prospect and the chances of graduating to higher levels are very high. For instance, it is not difficult to advance to a position of a senior tester, a QA team leader and ultimately to the managerial position. There is also a growing demand for skills in niche areas and software testing tips the list. Even in this segment there are special areas and scripting, test automation specialists are much thought after along with programming language experts in Java, shell, VB, Perl and Python.

Software testing as a job option holds out excellent prospects and with proper quality assurance training there is no reason why you can not embark on a high-paying successful career.

If your most recent Oracle DBA certification is for 9i, then it is starting to get a little bit dusty. There are still companies running release 9i of Oracle for their database, but that number is steadily shrinking. When Oracle 12c is released, that trend will likely accelerate. Beyond that, taking new features exams keeps you aware of the current capabilities of the Oracle database. While studying for the upgrade certificates I have often found new additions that are useful to me on the job. Information Technology professionals who do not update their skills as technology changes will soon be left behind. That said, if you are reading this article than you are already planning to take the 1Z0-055 exam. In it I will try to provide some insight into the test to help guide your study plan ..

All of the objectives that will be covered in the 1Z0-055 exam are listed on the Oracle Education website. There are a certain number of features that were introduced either in Oracle 10G or 11G that are not on that list. There will be no test questions for these features. The topic lists from Oracle Education are always complete. The New Features for 9i OCPs exam has eighty-four questions that must be answered in two hours. The questions are split into seventeen subject areas. Each topics will generally have one or two questions asked.

The majority of the test is on features that were introduced in 11G. There are a couple of areas with 10G-specific enhancements – previously Data Pump (which was a major new feature of 10G) and some Backup and Recovery enhancements that were introduced with 10G. The Automatic Storage Management subject area is particularly large because ASM was introduced in 10G and had significant upgrades in 11G. Likewise the SQL Tuning area is sizeable on the exam due to significant changes in both releases.

When you are studying, do not get caught up in the wrong details. New features exams will not be testing whether you can administrator an Oracle database. The only candidates taking this exam should already be Oracle Certified DBAs and so your ability to administer the database is taken as a given. The types of questions that you are likely to see on the exam includes:

  • Issues that might be encountered when upgrading an existing database to 11G.
  • New or removed parameters or settings and how they will affect database functionality.
  • How the administration of the database might be affected by new features.
  • What must be done in order to configure, enable, disable the features.

For the last, the test will not require detailed knowledge of a graphical interface or have you developing PL / SQL statements. Questions for features that involve coding or use of Enterprise Manager can not be tested directly. 1Z0-055 is primarily verifying that you know what new features have been added to Oracle, as well as the purpose of those features, and the steps to enable or disable them. When enabling a new feature requires a parameter change or a new command, you should know the parameter and all of its possible values or the command and its valid syntax. If a feature requires significant PL / SQL code to implement, you may need to know the basic implementation steps, but you will not be required to look at a page full of code and determine whether or not it will work.

1Z0-050 will be testing your knowledge of facts rather than experience-based questions. This is a necessity for upgrade tests given the nature of the material. Reading the relevant portions of the New Features documentation available with the Oracle 10G and Oracle 11G is one place to begin studying, but will not be sufficient to pass the exam. If you are using the manuals as your study source, you will also need to use the Administration Guide, Installation Guide, the Backup and Recovery Guide, and the ASM Guide (among others) to find the information you need. Before you schedule the test, you should be familiar with all of the objectives. Good luck on the exam.

Studying for 1Z0-052: Oracle Database 11g: Administration I

1Z0-052 is the administration element in the Oracle Database Administrator track. When passed in combination with any of three possible SQL tests, you will be recognized as an Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Associate. This is one of the more common Oracle exams taken by OCA / OCP candidates. People with knowledge of Oracle database administration are always in demand. Passing this exam does not guarantee that you have that knowledge and it certainly does not guarantee that an employee will hire you, but it is a step in the right direction on both counts. The key word in the previous sentence, however, is 'passing'. Oracle certification exams are not generally pushovers and they are easy to fail if you take one without being fully prepared. This article is intended to provide some direction towards that preparation.

All of the topics that will be covered in the 1Z0-052 exam are listed on the Oracle Education website. As your first step, you should visit that website and look at the topics. There are literally thousands of things that you should know about Oracle in order to be a good administrator. For the purposes of the test, however, anything that does not fit under an objective listed there will not show up on the test. The topic lists from Oracle Education are always complete. The Administration I exam has fifty objectives in seventeen subject areas. The test itself will have seventy multiple-choice or multiple-answer questions and you'll have ninety minutes to complete it. The passing score is sixty-six percent. For the multiple-answer questions, there is no partial credit. Not answering a question counts against your score as much as answering one incorrectly, so you do not want to leave any question unanswered – even if that means simply picking a letter at random.

The number of topics on 1Z0-052 is comparable to other Oracle certification tests. However, the range of topics is not. The Administration I test covers an extremely broad range of subject areas. As a general rule, Oracle certification tests have a fairly narrow focus. The SQL Fundamentals exam covers only SQL. The Real Application Clusters exam covers only RAC. Because this test covers subjects in such widely dispersed areas, you should spend extra time preparing for it. If you plan to use the Oracle manuals to study for this test, you will need to download the following titles from the Oracle documentation website:

  • Oracle Database Concepts
  • Oracle Database Administrator's Guide
  • Oracle Database Reference
  • Performance Tuning Guide
  • Net Services Administrator's Guide
  • Backup and Recovery User's Guide

Oracle has a cadre of excellent technical writers and the manuals are very good. They are also free and you can download them at any time. If you are new to Oracle, I highly recommend reading the Oracle Database Concepts manual from cover to cover. It will provide you with a firm grounding in numerous concepts that you really need to understand in order to be a good DBA.

1Z0-052 is an OCA-level test. The tests at this level are designed to cover a wide range of topics to a shallow depth. The exam will not generally require extensive knowledge for any of the objectives. When you are studying, do not try to become an expert on every subject. The goal for this test is to know a little about every topic rather than to know everything about any single topic. As I noted above, be sure that to go to the Oracle Education website and get the list of objectives. Use that as a checklist as you study. Ensure that you are well familiar with all of them before scheduling the exam. Good luck on the test.

Studying for 1Z0-144: Oracle Database 11g: Program With PL/SQL

1Z0-144 is one of the PL / SQL exams that will satisfy the requirement for the Oracle PL / SQL Developer Certified Associate certification. It is the updated version of the test 1Z0-147: Program with PL / SQL which was created for version 9i of the Oracle database and has not been updated since. The Oracle developer certification is popular and so the Program with PL / SQL tests are two of the more common Oracle exams taken. PL / SQL programming skills are extremely useful in the IT industry and the certification is a valuable addition to the resume of an Oracle developer. I found the Oracle Database 11g: Program with PL / SQL exam to be one of the more difficult Oracle certification tests. It is one that you can easily fail if you take it without being fully prepared. This article is intended to give you some insight into the test to assist in your study efforts.

All of the topics that will be covered in the 1Z0-144 exam are listed on the Oracle Education website. There are any number of PL / SQL capabilities that are not listed there, but they will not show up on the test. The topic lists from Oracle Education are always complete. The 11G Program with PL / SQL exam has sixty-nine topics in twenty-one subject areas. The test itself will have eighty multiple-choice or multiple-answer questions and you'll have ninety minutes to complete it. The passing score is sixty-five percent. For the multiple-answer questions, there is no partial credit. Not answering a question counts against your score as much as answering one incorrectly, so you do not want to leave any question unanswered – even if that means simply picking a letter at random. I will repeat one thing for those who did not do a double-take: eighty questions in ninety minutes. You will have less than sixty-eight seconds per question. Time is your enemy on this test. You must know the information well enough to be able to answer questions quickly.

It should come as no surprise that the majority of questions in 1Z0-144 will contain one or more blocks of PL / SQL. To do well on the test you must have a good grasp of PL / SQL syntax. A significant number of the test questions will ask you to look at one or more subprograms and then answer a question about whether they will work, what they will do, or if they will generate an error. You must have the ability to parse through PL / SQL code and 'run' the results in your head. Other questions will provide a block of code and ask what is required to make it function correctly. The code might require certain rights, or parameter values, or settings in the development environment. The questions that do not directly involve code will involve facts you should know about PL / SQL development: information about rights, initialization parameters, best practices, or capabilities.

The 1Z0-144 exam contains a large number of questions that contain exhibits. Some of the exhibits show PL / SQL subprograms and other show information about the database – typically tables affected by the subprograms. Some of the exhibits you must look at in order to answer the question, and others are optional. Time is a critical factor so you want to look at the exhibits only when you have to. While the test indicates that you should view the diagram and then answer the question, I would suggest the reverse. Read the question first before opening the exhibits. Each exhibit that you bypass will save you a few seconds that may prove critical to complete the test in time. I expect that a significant number of people run out of time on this test.

1Z0-144 is an OCA-level test which is generally considered to be entry-level. I will agree that the information being tested is at the level of PL / SQL fundamentals, but the time crunch means that you must know those fundamentals really well. Had the test length been 120 minutes rather than 90 minutes, there would have been more leisure to look through the PL / SQL subprograms before answering. With the current time limit, you must be able to very quickly scan through the code, which automatically means you must be more familiar with PL / SQL. Make sure that you view all of the exam topics on the Oracle Education website. You should be extremely familiar with all of them before scheduling the exam. Good luck on the test.
